Best Photo Size for a 3.5-Inch Round Magnet
September 21, 2026·4 min read

Quick answer
Aim for at least 1,200 pixels across, and more is better. A 3.5-inch round keepsake prints about 1,050 pixels wide at 300 DPI, plus a margin that wraps around the edge. Send a square-ish crop with breathing room above the head and around the shoulders so the round frame doesn't clip anything that matters.

Round is not a rectangle with the corners removed — at least not from the photo's point of view. A little planning at the crop stage is the difference between a keepsake that looks composed and one where someone's chin is at the bottom edge.
The Numbers
A 3.5-inch round keepsake needs roughly 1,050 pixels across the visible face at 300 DPI. We also need a margin beyond that circle, because the image wraps slightly around the edge of the piece.
- Minimum: about 1,200 pixels on the shortest side.
- Comfortable: 1,600–2,400 pixels, which is normal for any phone photo.
- Format: send the original JPEG, HEIC, or PNG — not a screenshot.
- Don't upscale it yourself. Send the original and let us handle sizing.
How to Crop for a Circle
Think of a circle inside a square, then leave room outside it.
- Leave space above the head — hair and hats are the most common casualties.
- Keep faces near the center, not near an edge.
- Group shots need faces big enough to read at 3.5 inches; a row of ten people rarely works.
- Anything important at the very edge — a hand, a signature, text — should be moved inward or left out.
You Don't Have to Crop It Yourself
Most people send the full photo and let us do the crop, which is usually the better outcome. You'll see the result on a proof before anything is pressed, and we'll adjust it if the framing isn't what you pictured.
Your Photos. Your Moments. Your Story. We press them so they stick around.
How a 3.5-inch photo magnet becomes part of the story
Our custom photo magnets are professionally produced as 3.5-inch round keepsakes. They are big enough to actually see the faces in the picture, but small enough to belong on the refrigerator, the filing cabinet at work, or the side of a metal lamp in grandma's bedroom.
You provide the photograph. We help you make sure the resolution, the crop, and the framing honor the moment. Most people send us a phone photo or a scan of an older print, and we walk them through the rest. The keepsake itself does the work after that — quietly, every day, for years.
Across the Yakima Valley
Families across the Yakima Valley have a way of holding tight to the photographs that matter. We hear it from grandparents in Moxee, from young couples in Zillah, and from churches and ministries gathering in Prosser. Wherever you live in the valley — from the orchard roads of Tieton to the riverfront in Prosser — a keepsake photo magnet can quietly carry your story from one chapter to the next.

Frequently Asked Questions
What resolution do I need for a 3.5-inch magnet?
+
Around 1,050 pixels at 300 DPI for the visible area, plus margin. Practically, anything from 1,200 pixels up will print well.
Should I crop the photo before sending?
+
You don't have to. Sending the full original gives us more room to compose the round crop, and you approve the result on a proof.
Can a landscape photo work on a round magnet?
+
Yes, as long as the subject isn't spread across the full width. We crop toward the faces.
Will part of my photo be cut off?
+
A small outer margin wraps around the edge of the piece, which is why we keep important detail away from the border. The proof shows you exactly what will be visible.
